Spatterdashes, or "Spats", are a variation of the gaiters worn by European infantry units mainly between the 18th and 19th centuries. They were designed to protect ones shoes and pants from the perils of traveling on foot.
As military dress inspired/transitioned into menswear, spats became a key component of mens suits, keeping the shoes and trousers clean on the god-forsaken city streets of the 19th and 20th centuries. Worn by everyone from royalty to gangsters, they became a symbol of status and wealth in a period when cleanliness was valued above all else, until slowing fading into obscurity during the 20th century, only to be remembered as a piece of your mob boss halloween costume. The apparent lack of representation they have in the sphere of modern fashion and the love of covered shoes that i’ve noticed (Alfredo Bannister, AS98) inspired me to breathe new life into this forgotten piece of fashion history.
We have created a modern interpretation of the traditional white leather spats. I wanted to make a version that could also be worn on shoes without a heel, as traditional spats have a strap on the bottom that goes through the gap that the heel makes. Tailored to my own taste in footwear, these one-piece deerskin spats are designed to not rise or drop when in motion, held up by the tension between the heel and the shin, which in turn creates these beautiful stacks on the front. The seams are stitched with white thread and finished with a stack of staples on each end.
Made from top-grain deerskin leather hand picked and hand sewn in house (some of the photographed samples have small holes but the item you receive should have none)
Please allow 1-2 weeks for optimal leather selection, sewing, and shipment
Thank you
